Bèta in Bestuur & Beleid
Welcome to BiBB! STEM in Governance & Policy - Bèta in Bestuur en Beleid (BiBB) organises various activities to bring public administration and the scientific community closer together so that STEM scientists can contribute to solving the complex problems society faces this 21st century.
Mission
The initiative Beta in Governance & Policy - ‘Bèta in Bestuur & Beleid’ (BiBB) is dedicated to bridging the gap between the realms of public policy and science. BiBB aims to enhance the presence of STEM-trained professionals in political and civil service roles. First, because certain societal challenges, such as the energy transition, will benefit from people with substantive knowledge. Second, intellectual diversity in general will lead to more informed decision-making in governance for all kinds of subjects. At this moment, a career in public governance or politics is not a straightforward choice for STEM-scientists, which is something we want to change!
Our Reasoning
In the Netherlands, the presence of politicians with a STEM background is notably scarce, and percentage of STEM-trained individuals in the civil service workforce trailing behind countries like the USA (15.9%) and South Korea (~30%). The Dutch Physics Council, along with other scientific councils, emphasizes the vital role that STEM professionals can play in informed policymaking. Their unique insights into scientific and technological advancements allow for a fresh perspective on policy challenges. Strengthening the connection between the realms of policy and science will significantly enhance the Netherlands' efforts in addressing climate change, supporting an aging population, and navigating the complexities of our digital society.
